The Southern California Airedale Association was organized in l927. Its founders, thirteen in number, included such well-known breeders and judges as Dr. Frank Porter Miller, Lou Holliday, Chris Shuttleworth and Dave Hicks. Dr. Miller was the first President of the club and Mr. S. Boehm was the first Secretary. Although the group was small, the love of the breed and the determination to promote it were strong. The purpose of the club then, as now, was to further the breeding and showing of more and better Airedales.
Shortly after organizing, on July 17, 1927 , the club held its first puppy match. The first specialty show was held March 15, 1928 . Thereafter puppy matches and specialty shows were held about every year until 1942, even during the dark days of the depression when money was scarce and it was difficult to get an entry.
In April 1942, a club meeting was in progress when an air raid signal was sounded and a black-out ensued. It was decided at that time to suspend all club meetings until after the war.
On March 28, 1946 , meetings of the club were resumed and a reorganization took place, with new officers being elected. Plans immediately got under way for a puppy match, which was held at San Marino , California , in October 1946. The first post war specialty show was held in conjunction with the Beverly Hills Kennel Club All Breed Show, May 3-4, 1947 , with fifty dogs actually present. Annual puppy matches and specialty shows have been held since that time, with a futurity match in 1948. The last two specialty shows have been in conjunction with the Los Angeles Kennel Club All Breed Shows, with fifty-four dogs present in 1946 and fifty in 1949. The Airedale Terrier Club of America graciously offered the "Airedale Bowl" to the winner of the 1949 specialty. The Airedale to win this honor was Ch. Lionheart Copper, owned by Mr. Lou Holliday.
It is the policy of this club to promote the breed and not the breeder or fancier, it being clearly recognized that no cause, no matter how great or small, can survive the submergence of its purpose in personality. Rotation in office is provided through limitation of terms of officers. It is also the desire that as many members as possible be kept active by serving on committees, thereby stimulating interest.
The Southern California Airedale Association is proud of its achievement and will continue to function with this as its slogan -
“Own an Airedale and Boost Your Breed.”
